Spicy Chicken Fried Tofu Sandwiches
We wanted to make these vegan chicken sandwiches because we were missing the non-vegan fastfood version!
We love eating healthy vegan food and we love eating vegan junk food ?♀️
Something to be said about balance.
This sandwich can be compared to Wendy’s spicy chicken sandwich or the one from KFC. The spices, breading and fried tofu make it pretty ‘chickeny.’

What is vegan chicken made of?
Vegan chicken that’s store bought is typically made out of pea protein, soy protein, flour, oils and seasoning.
We usually make ours out of tofu because it’s 1 ingredient and we love the texture.
Sometimes we will season our Basic Seitan recipe with poultry seasoning to make seitan chicken strips or wings.
How Do You Make A Spicy Vegan Chicken Sandwich?
Mix all the spices together.
Open the tofu, drain and squeeze out excess moisture.
Cut into 1/4-1/2 thick slices.
Toss the tofu slices gently in spice mixture, set aside.
Mix non dairy milk, hot sauce and lemon juice together, set aside.
Mix the cornmeal, flour, salt and pepper together, set aside.
Dip each piece of tofu into the milk briefly (so the seasonings don’t wash off) then drop them into the cornmeal/flour mixture and coat all sides. Tongs work really well for this.
Repeat for all the pieces of tofu and place on parchment paper until frying.
For shallow frying– heat vegetable oil till apprx. 300 degrees. Once oil is hot, place the tofu pieces in and cook for apprx. 7-10 minutes. Outside should be crisp and golden brown.
For the air fryer– place tofu pieces in the air fryer without spinner. Drizzle 3 tbsp of oil over all the pieces. Cook for apprx 20-25 minutes, flipping several times.
Spread the vegan mayo on your bun, layer toppings and spicy vegan chicken. EAT!
